blue right-pointing arrow Monitoring Oceanic Islands with Satellite Remote Sensing - Oceanic islands represent sensitive indicators of some aspects of the Earth's dynamic systems. Their landscapes (including shorelines) and land cover systems respond rapidly to perturbations caused by both natural and anthropogenic forcings. Isolated islands can serve as natural "dip sticks" for sea-level fluctuations, and ice masses preserved on higher latitude islands are indicators of regional climate change. This web site addresses an experimental program that seeks to use a remote sensing perspective to understand what an index suite of oceanic islands distributed around the Earth can teach us about the processes of "global change".  [keywords: Oceanic Islands, Island Biogeography, Remote Sensing, Islands, Climate Change, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, shorelines, marine terraces, climate forcing, Landsat, Radarsat] (Added: 2-Mar-2000 Hits: 796)  [Spider Link]
blue right-pointing arrow Navassa Remote Sensing Experiment - The Navassa Remote Sensing Experiment is an experiment which seeks to develop a unique Geographic Information System for Navassa island (located in the Caribbean region at 18 24'N, 75 01'W, about 70 miles east of Jamaica) that will combine satellite data from RADARSAT, SPOT, Landsat 7, TERRA, ENVISAT, and IKONOS together with advanced airborne remote sensing data, to serve as the spatial framework for understanding its biodiversity and issues associated with its conservation as a wildlife refuge.  [keywords: Navassa, GIS, remote sensing data] (Added: 24-Jun-1999 Hits: 761)  [Spider Link]
